MAGAZINES
With the variety of music magazines available in your high street you'd think there would be at least one covering new age music...

Unfortunately there isn't, and that's were the e-zines and subscription magazines come into their own. They are either artist specific, style specific or even label specific. E-zines (electronic magazines) are often mentioned on the 'net and are usually free to subscribe to (the only down side is the lack of pictures).

Many magazines are produced on a low budget. This normally doesn't take anything away from their content as they're produced by people who really care about the subject matter. It does mean that there usually isn't a lot left for advertising and so 'word of mouth' is the way they're normally spread around.

For additional reccomendations of some magazines I haven't got contact addresses for read a recent r.m.n. posting by Bill Binkelman, editor of Wind and Wire magazine.

AMBIENCE MAGAZINE
After three years as a nationally distributed newsagent-distributed mag, this Australian publication is now a fully operational web site.

Its team of writers do reviews, features and retospectives on a huge range of electronic and intrumental music - from experimental techno, dub and dance on European labels like FAX and CRAMMED DISCS to ambient and "new age" music labels from the USA like Hearts Of Space, Waveform, Narada and more. Regular features also look at music technology and other related subjects.

Printed back-issues from #1 to #7 make a fab read and are still available to buy for collectors via mail-order.

AURAL INNOVATIONS
A quarterly newsletter of band profiles, reviews, and fiction with a focus on Space Rock, but also including psych, ambient, and various electronics.

THE DANSANT
Ernie Woodall has put together an avante-garde music newsletter full of information about art music.

He plans for a free newsletter of about 12 issues. If the newsletter turns out to be a pleasant experience for the reader then after the first 12 issues, he'll start to ask for subscriptions and advertising.

FOLK ROOTS

HOLLOW EAR
Hollow Ear is an extension of RootsWorld, a virtual magazine that will explore music, present artists and labels, and look into other things in the culture at large.

Briefly resurrected as a one-shot glossy hard copy, this zine having to do with electronica, trip-hop, d and b, electronic, and ambient has been forced to go webzine and is expected to launch later this summer (1998).

A music magazine devoted to some of the world's most interesting and innovative musicians. Recently posted interviews include Kit Watkins, Alain Caron (of Uzeb), David Torn and Mick Karn.

KINDRED SPIRIT
This quarterly magazine of new age ideas and ideals is the only UK high street magazine I've found that regularly reviews new age music releases. Each issue contains about four pages of reviews including contact numbers if you can't find the albums in your local record shop. NEW AGE VOICE

SEQUENCES
Edited by Mick Garlick and well known in the U.K. amongst fans of electronic music. Previous issues came with a cassette (now with a cd), often featuring unreleased tracks and plenty of reviews and interviews; it's a great way of exploring new music.

Sequences doesn't just concentrate on e-music though. The numerous album reviews in each issue (CD as well as cassette only releases) have included artists as diverse as Keith Emerson and Geoff Downes to Steve Roach, Bekki Williams and r.m.n's very own Steve Verity. One interesting point is the 'retro-review' of a classic EM album. Issue 16 was of W. Carlos's 'Sonic Seasonings' written by Bob Saker.

In fact there really is much here that will satisfy new instrumental music lovers. The magazine itself is in black and white with many photo's (though the reproduction on some leaves a lot to be desired). A glossy cover, 52 packed pages and a cd make the d6.95 cover price (including p+p, overseas will vary) worth while.

WIND AND WIRE
Currently celebrating its first year of publication Wind and Wire is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to contemporary progressive music of a primarily instrumental nature. The name signifies the magazineCs agenda of reporting on both acoustic (WIND) and electronic (WIRE) music and covers both the small label/independent artist and the mainstream/major label acts. 'This book is about music, cosmology and meditation' and although this book is over ten years old it it still holds well as a reference book for the growth of electronic and new age music. Especially of interest is the suggested listening featuring artists like Brian Eno, Jade Warrior, TD and Klaus Schulze. ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC / ROUGH GUIDE TO JAZZ / ROUGH GUIDE TO ROCK
The Rough Guide series of music books are readily available from most high street bookshops and music shops. Each of the above make a good reference point for anyone with a general interest in music and, with a little digging, can reveal little nuggets about artists that pop up from time to time in r.m.n.

The most fascinating and, to me, well written of the three is the Rough Guide to World Music. Just dip in to this and, even if you're not a fan of world music, I reckon it will certainly persuade you to try at least one of their recommended albums.
