{"id":840,"date":"2022-12-03T09:57:58","date_gmt":"2022-12-03T14:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/?p=840"},"modified":"2022-12-03T09:57:58","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T14:57:58","slug":"not-knowing-what-you-dont-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/2022\/12\/03\/not-knowing-what-you-dont-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Knowing What You Don&#8217;t Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am constantly struck by the &#8220;expert&#8221; opinions of those who haven&#8217;t the first idea what they&#8217;re talking about.\u00a0 Most recently, I came across a thread on a forum in which I participate that was in the &#8220;off-topic&#8221; section and began by an incoherent post citing three different passages from Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>Yes?\u00a0 So what?\u00a0 At least, that was my initial reaction.\u00a0 I am one of the last people who should be holding forth on things Biblical.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s my point:\u00a0 I know that I don&#8217;t know nine-tenths of the Bible.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard that &#8220;Scripture interprets Scripture,&#8221; so I know that those who study Scripture deeply are always finding new references, correlations and (possibly) deeper understanding.<\/p>\n<p>As is so often in the era of the Internet, people who have no understanding, much less knowledge of a topic, find it necessary to take center stage and expose their ignorance for the rest of the world to see.\u00a0 Rather than be embarrassed by their ignorance, they seem to relish it.\u00a0 Because these days, opinions are more important than facts.<\/p>\n<p>The sub-head of this journal is &#8220;Everyone is entitled to my opinion.&#8221;\u00a0 Because everything I post here is opinion.\u00a0 Oh, there might be a smattering of fact here and there (&#8220;This guitar is made of wood&#8221;) but I make no claims to expertise.\u00a0 In fact, the subject I am most expert on is &#8220;being myself.&#8221;\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not always that good at that!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure when this trend began.\u00a0 The easy answer for me is &#8220;When social media began.&#8221;\u00a0 Of course, <em><strong>that&#8217;s just an opinion<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; however, the staggering preponderance of know-it-alls on the message boards has become a turn-off for me.\u00a0 Add to this the equally staggering number of argumentative, &#8220;I&#8217;m right and you&#8217;re wrong&#8221; types rang the death knell for me.\u00a0 I quite Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the rest.<\/p>\n<p>There are still the forums and boards I read, mostly because the topics interest me (guns, guitars, cars, etc.).\u00a0 But I discount those who approach topics claiming (without portfolio, at least) expertise.\u00a0 I simply smile, nod my head, and move on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am constantly struck by the &#8220;expert&#8221; opinions of those who haven&#8217;t the first idea what they&#8217;re talking about.\u00a0 Most recently, I came across a thread on a forum in which I participate that was in the &#8220;off-topic&#8221; section and &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/2022\/12\/03\/not-knowing-what-you-dont-know\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-840","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/840","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=840"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/840\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":842,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/840\/revisions\/842"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=840"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=840"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=840"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
