{"id":745,"date":"2021-07-22T08:49:31","date_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/?p=745"},"modified":"2021-07-22T08:49:31","modified_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:49:31","slug":"summertime-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/2021\/07\/22\/summertime-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"Summertime Blues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the somber sounding title, this is an upbeat post.\u00a0 In fact, it&#8217;s a call-back to what may be considered one of the top summer songs of the rock era.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Summertime_Blues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eddie Cochran<\/a> wrote and recorded this anthem of teenage angst and frustration in 1958.\u00a0 I first heard it performed on record by the band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/vincebus-eruptum-mw0000261239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Cheer<\/a>,<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/5\/5a\/BlueCheerVincebusEruptum.jpg\" alt=\"VIncebus Eruptum - album by Blue Cheer\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The album cover for Vincebus Eruptum, by Blue Cheer (1968)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>and then shortly after by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/the-who-mn0000577627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who<\/a> (the version recorded on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/live-at-leeds-mw0000014217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Live At Leeds<\/a> album is tremendous).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimg.discogs.com%2F-OUEKGZDq0GJjz8wTaY1r20GgdY%3D%2Ffit-in%2F300x300%2Ffilters%3Astrip_icc()%3Aformat(jpeg)%3Amode_rgb()%3Aquality(40)%2Fdiscogs-images%2FR-4397435-1387570421-8736.jpeg.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1\" alt=\"Live At Leeds by the Who (1970)\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Live At Leeds double-LP album cover by the Who, 1970<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty simple song: The standard I, IV, V chord structure of blues and many rock songs.<\/p>\n<p>So why post an article about it?<\/p>\n<p>Realizing that almost a month has gone by since my last post, I felt the need to update the blog.\u00a0 And since I&#8217;ve been playing a lot of guitar this year, and it&#8217;s summertime, it all seemed to fit.\u00a0 In fact, I&#8217;m pretty upbeat about my guitar playing of late as well, and the blues has been a big part of that.<\/p>\n<p>There are times when I feel playing nothing but blues guitar is a bit limiting, so I keep going back to some non-blues pieces I enjoy playing.\u00a0 Songs from artists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/america-mn0000019297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/david-crosby-mn0000644880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Crosby<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/the-allman-brothers-band-mn0000745964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allman Brothers<\/a>, and the vastly underrated (in my opinion) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/love-mn0000314600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose most everyone remembers the summers of their youth as the &#8220;best of times.&#8221; In my case, the years 1967-1969 were not only the best of my time, but were pivotal years in modern history and culture.\u00a0 There was the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/north-america\/usa\/california\/articles\/what-was-san-franciscos-summer-of-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summer of Love<\/a>&#8221; Arts Festival logo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yes, there was turmoil (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/martin-luther-king-assassination-riots-1968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr<\/a>. and the <a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/1968-democratic-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiasco at the Democrat Convention<\/a> in 1968), but the music generated spoke powerfully of the social issues of the day.\u00a0 Sentiment against the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/vietnam-war\/vietnam-war-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war in Vietnam<\/a> had divided the USA, and many songs reflected this division.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I pick up my guitar and play a song from the summers of my youth, I am transported back in time to those days, where I wander with a smile on my face and memories that live forever.\u00a0 Summertime blues?\u00a0 Never!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the somber sounding title, this is an upbeat post.\u00a0 In fact, it&#8217;s a call-back to what may be considered one of the top summer songs of the rock era.\u00a0 Eddie Cochran wrote and recorded this anthem of teenage angst &hellip;
