I recently posted on Facebook<\/a> a thought exercise I’ve been nurturing for a while.\u00a0 I’m going to try to flesh it out a bit more here, knowing that I haven’t finalized the entire concept, so there may be gaps or flaws.\u00a0 Be sure to let me know.<\/p>\n

There are numerous posts<\/a> available that report Elon Musk<\/a> (Tesla, X, SpaceX, StarLink, Boring, etc.) has proposed sending a million AI-powered satellites into space containing solar-powered data centers.\u00a0 This is not as far-fetched (in my opinion) as it might seem at first.\u00a0 In fact, I think it may be the answer to massive, growing land usage by data centers.<\/p>\n

Technically, the specifications aren’t extreme:\u00a0 Power can come from solar panels, or by small nuclear reactors (many submarines and surface ships in the U. S. Navy are already nuclear-powered).\u00a0 The massive cooling requirements for heavily-utilized computers is negated because space is the coldest environment known to man (near absolute zero, or -270\u00b0 C (-454.7 \u00b0F).<\/p>\n

What a number of the reports don’t mention, or simply are unaware, is that data storage doesn’t require acres upon acres of concrete buildings.\u00a0 Micron Technology recently published an article<\/a> about how DNA has the potential to store the world’s data in ultra-compact form.\u00a0 Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the core molecule in cells that stores the genetic instructions used for the growth, development, function, and reproduction of all living organisms (source: National Human Genome Research Institute<\/a>).\u00a0 Micron states that “Under one system, a single gram of DNA could store 215 million gigabytes of data, and a quantity of DNA smaller than a sugar cube could store all the movies ever made. Scaling up even further, a container of DNA about the size of two passenger vans could hold all the data ever created in the world.<\/em><\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The technology exists.\u00a0 The barrier to use is, of course, cost.\u00a0 However, researchers are working, and already the cost has come down notably.<\/p>\n

Unknown at this time, or at least not considered, is the “Law of Unintended Consequences.”\u00a0 I am not by nature a pessimist, but I also believe that being realistic means exploring potential downsides.\u00a0 One of the negatives mentioned about Musk’s proposal is “satellite congestion.”\u00a0 However, if the claims of DNA can be realized, a network of a million data center satellites would be needless.\u00a0 A few, redundant satellites could provide backup and failover if needed, and man’s capabilities to work in low earth orbit continue to grow.\u00a0 If repairs are needed, a manned mission for extra-vehicular activity (EVA) could be planned in advance.\u00a0 So too can the potential for a satellite to fall out of orbit.\u00a0 These are not problems that haven’t been faced before.<\/p>\n

I’ll give Musk a lot of credit.\u00a0 I haven’t always been a fan, and some of his successes have had questionable foundations, but the man has been visionary in a number of ways.<\/p>\n

Seeing land being reclaimed from data centers back into parklands, farms and housing tracts, reducing the need for energy consumption and natural resources all have an appeal that I feel shouldn’t be overlooked.\u00a0 Thoughts?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
