{"id":1002,"date":"2025-08-07T07:33:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T11:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/?p=1002"},"modified":"2025-08-07T07:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T11:33:09","slug":"the-substack-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mfna.org\/rfo\/2025\/08\/07\/the-substack-route\/","title":{"rendered":"The Substack Route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have recently begun writing articles on <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Substack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!xBQa!,w_500,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack.com%2Fimg%2Fsubstack.png\" alt=\"Substack logo\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Substack logo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Those articles are much like the articles I write here, but they have a wider, built-in audience.\u00a0 I have never made the effort to drum up readership here, and as a result, this site is mostly a forgotten breadcrumb on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a complaint.\u00a0 When I first began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfna.org\/index2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music For A New Age<\/a> web site, my main purpose in doing so was to learn and implement HTML.\u00a0 As the years passed, the site morphed into what is seen today:\u00a0 A WordPress blog site.<\/p>\n<p>Using the site as a &#8220;sandbox&#8221; has allowed me to employ it as a development platform.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve created a &#8220;pseudo-forum&#8221; as a proof-of-concept (which was not accepted by my then-employer), a storage mechanism for files and data I could access anywhere an Internet connection existed, an exploration of cascading style sheets (CSS), which is now the landing page at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfna.org\">https:\/\/www.mfna.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fredpuhan.substack.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Substack<\/a> is where I am actively developing my writing skills.\u00a0 In my opinion, the writing tools are less flexible than are WordPress&#8217;s, but the main point of my doing so is that I get readers without having to do any promotion.\u00a0 Thus, I can improve my writing, and the feedback I receive helps me do so.<\/p>\n<p>There is a bit of a concern I have.\u00a0 Substack has numerous categories one can scroll through, search, and &#8220;silo&#8221; articles.\u00a0 I have not found a way to categorize my articles there as I can here.\u00a0 My as-yet-unproven sense is that authors who stick to a specific category get more readers.\u00a0 One of the writers I follow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.declassified.live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Kelly,<\/a> an investigative reporter, writes exclusively about politics.\u00a0 I have neither the expertise nor the discipline to always write on a single topic.\u00a0 I have multiple interests, and write about what I know, what I&#8217;ve seen, what I&#8217;ve experienced and what I I wish for.<\/p>\n<p>So, my Substack isn&#8217;t replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfna.org\/rfo\/\">this site<\/a>.\u00a0 In the long run, perhaps it will make my writing here better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have recently begun writing articles on Substack.
